Hurricane season on the Gulf Coast runs from June through November, but the peak window falls between mid-August and mid-October. Why Seawalls Fail During Hurricanes
Overtopping and backside erosion. When surge water crests a seawall that is too low, it cascades over the top and scours the soil on the landward side. That soil loss undermines the wall’s foundation and can cause sections to tilt or collapse even though the wall itself was not directly struck.
Anchor system failure. Tie-back anchors hold the wall against lateral soil pressure. During a surge event, pressure increases dramatically as saturated soil becomes heavier and surge water creates additional hydrostatic load. A wall with corroded anchors can bow outward or fail at connection points.
Scour at the wall base. Surge water moving past a seawall creates powerful currents that scour the bottom at the wall’s toe. If the foundation is already compromised, the wall can tip forward.
Joint and panel failure. Sheet pile joints that have opened over time, cracked concrete panels, and corroded connections all become entry points for surge water and soil movement.
Step 1 – Complete a Pre-Season Inspection
Walk the full length of your seawall from both sides. From the water side, look for bowing, cracks, rust staining, and scour at the base. From the land side, probe the ground behind the wall for soft spots, voids, or depressions indicating soil movement. Check all hardware for pitting, section loss, or pulled fasteners.

Step 2 – Address Anchor System Issues
Helical tie-back anchors can be installed through or behind the existing wall to supplement or replace a failed original anchor system. If your wall is more than 15 to 20 years old and has never had its anchor system evaluated, this is a high priority before peak season.
Step 3 – Seal Joints and Cracks
Every open joint or crack is a path for surge water and soil to migrate through the wall. For vinyl sheet pile systems, failed joints can be sealed with flexible marine sealant. For concrete seawalls, surface cracks can be addressed with epoxy injection. Any crack associated with rust staining should be evaluated by a professional before sealing.
Step 4 – Install or Restore Scour Protection
Riprap placed at the base of the wall absorbs surge current energy before it can erode the foundation. For properties on sandy substrate, scour protection is critical. Any wall showing signs of prior scour should have protection installed before storm season.
Step 5 – Clear Drainage Points
Confirm every weep hole and drain pipe is clear and functional. Blocked weep holes cause hydrostatic pressure to build behind the wall during surge events. Probe each one with a wire and flush any that show blockage.
Step 6 – Document Your Wall’s Current Condition
Photograph your seawall thoroughly from both sides before storm season. Date-stamped photos combined with professional inspection reports create a solid record for insurance and damage claims after a storm.
Step 7 – Know Your Wall’s Elevation Relative to Surge Risk

What to Do After a Storm Event
Even if your seawall appears to have made it through a hurricane or tropical storm without obvious damage, do not assume it came through unaffected. Surge and heavy wave action can shift soil, loosen anchors, and open small gaps that are not visible until they have had time to worsen. A post-storm inspection is worth doing every time, not just when something looks obviously wrong.
Start on the land side. Walk the full length of the wall and look for new depressions, soft spots, or areas where the ground seems to have settled since before the storm. Compare what you see to the photos you took during your pre-season inspection. Even small changes are worth noting, since soil that has started to move behind the wall often does not show visible symptoms again until the next storm makes the problem worse.
Check the water side just as carefully. Look for new bowing or leaning that was not there before, panels that have shifted or separated at the joints, and any new scour or exposed area at the base of the wall. Surge currents can remove a surprising amount of material from around the toe of a wall in a single event, and that loss is not always obvious from the surface.
Inspect the hardware. Tie-back rods, waler connections, and cap fasteners can loosen under the stress of a storm even if they do not fail outright. A connection that has shifted slightly may not be a problem today, but it is worth flagging and monitoring, especially heading into the next storm in an active season.
Test the drainage. After a surge event, the soil behind your wall is likely saturated. Confirm that your weep holes are still clear and draining properly. A blocked weep hole after a storm is worse than one blocked beforehand, because the wall is now working to relieve pressure from water it just absorbed.
Document everything you find. Take dated photos of any changes, even minor ones, and keep them alongside your pre-storm documentation. This paired record is valuable both for tracking the wall’s condition over time and for supporting any insurance claim if damage becomes more apparent later.
Act quickly if you spot something. If your inspection turns up new bowing, cracking, exposed scour, or shifted hardware, do not wait to have it assessed. The window between storms in an active hurricane season can be short, and a wall that has already absorbed one event has less capacity to withstand the next one without repair.
